Home Dental Care

A few minutes a day spent in cleaning your pet's teeth will greatly help in preventing painful gum disease, premature tooth loss and potentially deadly systemic infections involving the heart and kidneys.

START EARLY!!
This tooth and gum problem (periodontal disease), starts as early as 1-2 years of age and without care, progresses to irreversible damage by 4-6 years of age. This is why it is so important to start your new puppy or kitten early on a regular dental program!

Hard food and rubber toys are helpful but not totally effective in keeping the teeth and gums healthy. To successfully treat and prevent periodontal disease we recommend the following method and home dental care products.

BEGIN SLOWLY
Before you use any product, slowly get your per acclimated to this process. We suggest you start with your finger, or plain gauze or a washcloth wrapped around your finger gently wiping 1-2 teeth (the outside surfaces) at a time. Use praise and patience and do it in the area of your home where your pet feels comfortable and confident. In most large dogs, some smaller dogs and even some cats, you can graduate from the washcloth to a specially designed toothbrush we provide. (While regular brushing is the most effective means of preventing periodontal disease, the daily use of gauze or a cloth will greatly improve your pet's oral hygiene, not to mention its breath!)

NEXT STEP
As your pet becomes comfortable, gradually begin the use of an oral hygiene solution or pet toothpaste. Use these products as directed on a regular basis. Good Luck!

If you are unsure how to use the products, or have any further questions regarding your pet's dental care, please call us. You would be happy to set up an appointment with one our vetinary team for a demonstration.
